CUSA League History

About Calgary United Soccer Association (CUSA):

Organized soccer in Calgary dates back to 1898 when the Calgary Association Football League held its inaugural season with 6 teams and 140 players. Many iterations and years later, CUSA was founded as an amalgamation of Calgary Men's Soccer League and Calgary United Soccer. In its inaugural season, CUSA operated leagues for approximately 30 teams and 600 players. Over the past 35 years the association has grown dramatically today consisting of over 310 teams and 9,000+ registered players and coaches. CUSA offers its members two seasons of play annually (indoor and outdoor) in both men's, women's and co-ed programs. 2016 17 saw the return of Futsal.

Our oldest club, Caledonian Soccer Club, began in 1904. The Black Cup is Calgary's oldest soccer competition. It has been annually held since 1914.

The Men's Program offers competitive league play for players from 16 years of age and older. Teams move within the league through a promotion and relegation structure based upon final divisional standings. While the league has divisions with age restrictions, players are able to register to a division of choice providing they meet the minimum age restriction. The Men's Program offers Open Divisions (16 Years or Older), Master's Divisions (35 Years or Older), Over 45 and 55 Divisions for competitive and recreational skill levels.

Men's soccer in Calgary continues to show growth at both ends of the league's spectrum. Players are remaining in the league as demonstrated by the growth in the Masters, O45 and O55 divisions and new teams are forming as players graduate from youth soccer or move into Calgary.

Calgary United Soccer expanded its programs beyond the delivery of men's and adult coed soccer to include the delivery of a women's program commencing in the 2016 Outdoor Season. The new program gave the female players in Calgary and area a new league to play in. The inaugural season saw 9 teams participate in the Classics Division. With the interest in female soccer being strong across the nation CUSA anticipates that this will be an area of additional growth in future seasons. Our Women's Program offers Open Divisions (16 Years or Older), Classics Divisions (30 Years or Older), and Over 40 Divisions for competitive and recreational skill levels.

The Calgary Coed Rec Soccer (Coed) program was started in 2002 out of the Calgary Soccer Centre as a way for adults (18+) to learn and enjoy the game of soccer in a fun, social and recreational environment. The Coed program now offers both an Indoor and Outdoor (7v7) season throughout the year. Calgary Coed strives for adult players to have fun on and off the field and creates a social atmosphere for players to have fun and learn the game of soccer. Throughout the growing years of the Coed program teams are able to take part in various skill levels. With the vast amount of levels throughout the program it allows a multitude of players to enjoy the game of soccer and develop their skills.

Copa Futsal became an Associate Member of Calgary United Soccer for the 2015 16 Indoor Season. In 2016 17 Futsal became a full member of CUSA with the goal to qualify teams to represent Alberta at the CSA Futsal National Championship. Futsal is the official FIFA and UEFA version of indoor 5 a side football and indeed the only small sided game recognized internationally by every confederation. Our Futsal Program (16 Years or Older) is for the Open Age Level.

CUSA offers numerous tournaments for CUSA teams in all programs. Our largest tournaments, the Outdoor Nations Cup and the Indoor Nations Cup, celebrates culteral awareness and ethnic pride throughout communities.
